Recognising Darren’s contribution to Orthoplastics

On 30th April, Orthoplastics will mark the retirement of Darren Close, Financial Director, after nearly 30 years with the business.

Darren joined Perplas Ltd in August 1997, stepping into a role that would become central to the company’s future. From the beginning, he brought a clear, steady approach to finance, helping the business find its footing during a period of real change.

Leading through transformation

In those early years, Darren was closely involved in working through the challenges linked to United Industries, while supporting the development of what would go on to become Orthoplastics. When the engineering side of the business was sold and Orthoplastics Ltd was formed in 2006, he remained a constant presence, helping guide the business through a defining moment in its history.

His role didn’t stop there. Darren also supported the wider group, including helping manage the finance function for Orthoponents Ltd, and later played a key role in supporting the business as it became part of Viant.

Through it all, he stayed focused on what mattered, keeping the finance function strong, stable and ready to support growth.

Supporting growth behind the scenes

Much of Darren’s impact sits behind the scenes, but it’s there in the foundations of the business today.

He’s supported major investments and developments across Orthoplastics, including press installations, expansion in Component Machining and Extrusion, site refurbishments at Grove Mill and Albion Mill, and the development of Futures Park and Direct Compression Moulding.

These are big milestones in the company’s story, and Darren’s role in enabling them has been quietly but critically important.

He also spent time supporting international operations, including Orthoplastics China, often working across time zones to keep everything moving in the right direction.

A steady and trusted presence

Darren has been a key part of the leadership team for many years. He’s known for his calm, considered approach and for being someone people trust when it comes to making the right decisions for the business.

Orthoplastics Managing Director Rodney Crooks said: “Darren has been instrumental in the growth of Orthoplastics. His leadership of the finance function and his contribution to the wider business have helped shape where we are today. He’s been a trusted colleague for many years, he’ll be greatly missed.”

Looking ahead

As Darren steps into retirement, he leaves behind a business that’s grown and evolved significantly during his time. We wish him all the very best in his next chapter.
