What is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)?

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a high-performance thermoplastic belonging to the polyethylene family. It is defined by its exceptionally long molecular chains, typically between 2–6 million g/mol, which give the material outstanding strength, toughness, and durability. UHMWPE is highly resistant to wear, impact, and abrasion, while also offering a very low coefficient of friction, similar to PTFE. It is chemically inert against most corrosive substances, apart from strong oxidisers, and delivers reliable performance in demanding environments. These unique properties make UHMWPE the material of choice for medical implants, industrial components, and specialist engineering applications where performance and longevity are critical.
