Exploring the Future of Implant Polymers

The 2026 Implant Polymers: UHMWPE and PEEK Conference brought together researchers, engineers, clinicians and industry specialists to discuss the latest developments in implantable polymer technologies.

As a Bronze Sponsor of the event, Orthoplastics was proud to support a conference that continues to play an important role in advancing understanding and innovation across the biomaterials sector.

The programme covered a wide range of topics, from material performance and longevity through to additive manufacturing and emerging implant technologies. For the Orthoplastics team, it provided an excellent opportunity to hear first-hand about the latest research, exchange ideas with experts from across the industry and gain valuable insight into the future direction of implantable polymers.

A focus on innovation

One of the most interesting aspects of the conference was the breadth of research being presented. While UHMWPE and PEEK remained central themes throughout the programme, discussions also explored wider developments in implantable polymers, manufacturing processes and material performance.

There was particular interest in improving implant longevity, enhancing oxidation resistance and understanding how materials can continue to meet the demands of increasingly complex medical applications.

Additive manufacturing was another key topic. Presentations explored how advances in 3D printing and point-of-care manufacturing have the potential to create new opportunities for medical device development while maintaining the quality and consistency required for implantable applications.

Bringing research and industry together

One of the strengths of the conference is its ability to bring together experts from different disciplines. Researchers, manufacturers, clinicians and regulatory specialists all approach implant materials from different perspectives, yet many of the challenges discussed were shared across the industry.

Reflecting on the event, Technical Director Chris Turner said:

"What makes this conference particularly valuable is the quality of the discussions taking place. It brings together people who are working at every stage of the implant lifecycle, from research and development through to manufacturing and clinical application."

"For Orthoplastics, it's an opportunity to stay closely connected to the latest developments in biomaterials and gain insight into where the industry is heading. The innovation being demonstrated across UHMWPE, PEEK and additive manufacturing continues to show how much potential there is for implantable polymer technologies in the years ahead."

Looking ahead

The Implant Polymers: UHMWPE and PEEK Conference once again demonstrated the importance of collaboration, research and knowledge sharing within the biomaterials community.

Orthoplastics would like to thank the organisers, speakers and attendees for making the event such a success. We look forward to continuing the conversations and supporting the future development of implantable polymer technologies.
